Sjömärke svart och gult
The picture shows, from the left, first the cardinal marks, then the lateral marks, followed by the point mark, the middle mark and the special mark. Cardinal marks are placed to the east, west, north or south of an obstacle or the limit of the fairway. Cardinal marks are distinguished by being yellow and black, and often but not always have top marks - the two triangles - to indicate the direction of travel.
The triangles of the top mark are reflected in the color scheme. The triangles, or arrows, point to the black area. North Marks are shown on the chart as a stick with two upward pointing triangles on top of each other. In the water, the mark is black on the upper half and yellow on the lower half with or without a top mark. As a rule of thumb, think of the triangles as pointing north.
South Marks are shown on the chart as a stick with two triangles pointing downwards. In the water, the mark is yellow on the upper half and black on the lower half with or without a top mark.

As a rule of thumb, think of the triangles as pointing south. East Marks are shown on the chart as a stick with two triangles pointing away from each other. In the water, this mark is black on the top and bottom half and yellow in the middle with or without a top mark. As a rule of thumb, think of the triangles as an O, or the yellow cheese between the sandwiches.
West Marks are shown on the chart as a stick with two triangles pointing towards each other. In the water, the mark is yellow on the top and bottom halves and black in the middle with or without a top mark. As a rule of thumb, you can think of the triangles as a mirrored V, or with a little imagination, a vest or a wine glass for the V. Example 1 The image shows a foundation with the four cardinal marks and how you can pass them.
It is clear how the cardinal marks show you on which side to go around them!

They do not point the direction to the ground but show you which side to go around them! Example 2 It is unusual for a foundation to be marked on all sides. Most often a shoal is marked with only a cardinal mark. In this case, it is important for you to keep track of the direction you are traveling and the course of any fairway. The north mark shown in the picture indicates that the mark is north of the shoal and therefore the boat should pass north of the mark.
Lateral Marks Lateral marks come in different sizes and shapes. Sometimes it is just a colored stick, sometimes a stick with a top mark and sometimes a big buoy! The top mark for the red mark is a square and for the green one a triangle. Lateral marks are easily recognizable by their red and green colors. Lateral marks indicate fairways and their boundaries.
On the chart, the marks are often marked only with the letter G for green and R for red. To know which side of a lateral mark to pass it, you need to know the main direction of the fairway. You should have the red marks to port and the green ones to starboard when traveling in the main direction of a fairway. The main direction of the fairway is towards ports and is marked on the chart with an arrow.
Check against the chart what the lateral mark indicates. For example, it may indicate depths that do not affect you but only larger ships. Example of the Fairway Direction The direction of the fairway is not marked in reality but on the chart the symbol is a large arrow with a green and red dot on either side. It is important to learn the direction of the fairways as the lateral marks rarely appear as gates as shown in the picture.
There is a rule of thumb that all fairways lead to the port. When leaving the port, the green lateral mark should be on your port side and the red one on your starboard side. For example, if you only see a green lateral mark, you need to know the direction of the fairway to know which side to pass it on.
Other Marks Special marks are actually yellow sometimes with a cross as a top mark and appear on the chart as a stick with a cross above it. Special marks identify areas that contain an obstacle or border area. You should not go inside a special mark if it is at a border area. It is safest to keep a safe distance from them. Special marks are not primarily intended for navigation, but instead warn you of a cable, different types of measuring instruments, a border or an area, etc.
Midway markers are uncommon in our archipelago, but it is still useful to know what they mean. The median mark marks the center of a large fairway. Dot marks are also not a common mark, but should they appear, they are easy to recognize. The mark is black and red with two black balls on top. The dot mark is placed on or next to a foundation of limited extent.
These can be passed on any side, often even quite close. Other Forms The reason why different markings look different is that they need to be visible to everyone, from small recreational boats to larger commercial vessels. Usually, smaller waterways are marked with narrower buoys and marks, while larger waterways for commercial traffic are marked with large buoys and high marks.
However, the color scheme and any top mark are always consistent. On the chart, the marks and buoys are usually distinguished by their respective superscripts. It is therefore very important to learn these so you know what to look for. Single Lines and Marks A single line is a line through two distinguishable points - the single marks themselves.
